Mountain Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - May 1, 2024

There are an abundance of Little Yellow Stoneflies size 16 hatching in our trout streams and many Light Cahill Mayflies size 16. I match these with Murray's Stonefly Dry (yellow) size 6 and Light Cahill Dry size 16. These naturals begin hatching at mid-day and continue until dusk. Watch the tails of the pools at dusk for feeding trout and fish your fly on a Classic 7.5ft 6X leader. Remember, in order to give your trout the best chance to survive, mash the barb down on all of your flies.

All of the native brook trout streams in the Shenandoah National Park are clear and fishable.  Stay low and sneak in order to keep from spooking the trout.  Try not to get behind someone, as what they didn't catch they have already spooked. If I see a bunch of cars in one area that I know are fisherman, then I'll head to another stream.

For more information on these streams, see my book Trout Fishing in the Shenandoah National Park.  All of the streams are listed in the back in alphabetical order with stream access and where to park.

We are still booking guided trips for the native brook trout streams in the Shenandoah National Park. See our website for more information.
